Laminate backsplash: Economy in kitchen design

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

A friend of mine decided to go in for a kitchen remodel project. But this was a project with a difference. No, there were no changes in the kitchen appliances nor were the cabinets removed. Just a few minor alterations like replacement of the kitchen cabinet doors with polycarbonate, a refurbished floor and a new lighting system was all that it took to bring the spunk back in to the kitchen. But the one change that really got me startled was the backsplash. It wasn’t something overtly expensive but a very reasonable yet extremely attractive alternative. I was pleasantly surprised to see that a laminate backsplash could add so much visual appeal and color, not just to the wall on which it was installed, but to the entire kitchen. One look and even you will be forced to take notice.

Great looks and easy installation

The laminate backsplash consists of a thin sheet of plastic laminate stuck over a piece of plywood or particle board. The entire process of installing a laminate backsplash is extremely simple and can be completed at home. Here’s an overview:

* Attach the laminate backsplash to the counter top by means of dry wall screws drilled from under the counter top.
* The wall may not be really very even so it would be better to leave the top part of the laminate as it is.
* Apply the adhesive on the laminate pieces and press against the wall in the position desired. Trim the flush on the front edge of the laminate.
* Once the laminate is placed in to position, then drive screws from the cabinets in to the laminate backsplash.

With these few steps you can recreate that 70’s look in your kitchen. In addition to the ease of installation, you can choose from a range of colors and designs. Whether it is the stainless steel laminate backsplash or the plastic laminate backsplash, you can choose from an array of stunning colors. Even the digitally printed laminates add great personality to the kitchen. You can also paint or wall paper the laminate kitchen backsplashes, provided you use the right kind of primer. But what if you decide on replacing the laminate kitchen backsplash? Well, that may not be such a great idea considering the amount of effort involved.

Some great laminate ideas

Are you looking for some really cool laminate backsplash ideas? Or do you have some important questions in mind? If you’re dying to know whether to attach the laminate backsplash from the top or the bottom of the counter top and similar queries, then post your questions on the forums concerning backsplashes and let the experts take care of the rest.

If you’re looking for something that’s stylish, colorful and low-cost, then your search ends with the laminate backsplash.

Pre remodel tasks

Kitchen remodel is undertaken just one or twice in a lifetime. Hence that’s all the more reason for you to go about the whole process very systematically. Kitchen remodel requires detailed and well-thought out planning for each of the following aspects:

* Kitchen flooring: This includes the type of flooring like hardwood, bamboo or laminate.
* Kitchen lighting: Take time to choose the fixtures, lamps, light controls, spot lighting etc.
* Kitchen sinks and faucets: All the faucets, stainless steel, brass and plastic handles need to be reviewed.
* Kitchen appliances: What kind of cook tops, stoves, refrigerator, microwave, and dishwasher are you going to install in your brand new kitchen?
* Kitchen cabinets: So, what’s it going to be – wood, plastic or metal for you?
* Kitchen cook tops: You can choose from quartz, marble, stone, granite and wood.

Small Kitchen Renovations : Remodeling Ideas For Small Kitchens

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

People seem to think of big spaces, big plans and big budgets when the mull remodeling projects. But remodeling doesn’t always need big budgets. Or big spaces for that matter. You can redesign your small kitchen on a shoestring budget.

The Golden Rule

The Golden Rule of kitchen remodeling is this : clear the space of all clutter to start with. Take a close look at the functionality of every item in your kitchen. You may be surprised to see how much clutter your kitchen has. Impulsive purchases and gifts that have hardly ever been used but are still in your kitchen since as long as you can remember. Products that could be put to very good use after some minor repairs.

Once you have a list of all such items, you could then decide what to do with them. Either use them yourself, sell them or give them away to anyone who could use them.

With all the clutter gone, you can now focus on improving how your kitchen looks and feels.

Here is a list of factors that have a very high impact on how your kitchen looks …

Repainting the kitchen walls : Painting your kitchen walls is possibly one of the least expensive things you could do, but it has a very high impact on how your kitchen looks. The most expensive flooring may go unnoticed, but anyone who enters your kitchen will definitely see the walls. Since most kitchens have relatively very little open wall space, changing the color of your kitchen walls is one of the easiest and low cost modifications you could do.

Cabinets : Cabinets have a very high impact on the way your kitchen looks. Sleek cabinetry can do a world of good to your kitchen. Wooden cabinetry does look good of course. Especially against honey colored walls. You could also install glass fronted cabinets for a sleek and trendy look.

Kitchen appliances : One or at most two colorful appliances could be very good to have in your kitchen. Appliances that are metallic, black or white are very common these days and might go unnoticed.

Countertops : These are more expensive to change and also require quite a bit of work. Replacing your countertop with quartz, granite or faux stone an work wonders for your kitchen. Also, changing your countertop’s color from dark to light could have a significant impact.

Wall art : While wall art is rarely if ever used in kitchens, you could hang a painting, a metal mural or a tapestry on a wall not in line with fumes from the cooking range or stove.

Lighting : Well lit kitchens not only look better, they also make you feel better. Plenty of air and natural light is essential for any kitchen. You could also add a few lighting fixtures to add cheer to your kitchen.
