Small Kitchen Floor Plans

The kitchen floor plan is simply the way the kitchen is laid out to provide space for working and storage. Out of this floor plan is created the famous work triangle. The work triangle is the path that connects the refrigerator, sink and the oven. A properly constructed work triangle can make the kitchen more efficient and working in it comfortable.

There are five types of kitchen floor plans. These are called the single wall, corridor, the L shaped, the U shaped and the G shaped layout. Before you remodel your kitchen find out which floor suits your kitchen most. Then pay attention to the work triangle.

Single wall lay out

This is a floor plan where the kitchen consists of only the wall. These types of layout are used for very small kitchens. In this layout the work triangle is more a work line, since the refrigerator, sink and the oven are in one line. Storage is provided by stack cabinets installed on the wall above the counter.

The corridor floor plan

This floor plan resembles a short aisle consisting of a passage between two walls facing each other. This type of layout is excellent for having the classic work triangle. However, there is space only for one person in such a kitchen. Two would be a crowd. Here also storage is provided by stack storage solutions. The kitchen would look much brighter with task lighting and under the cabinet recessed lighting. To enhance the effect have lights inside the cabinets and glass inserts. Use the lower portion of the wall for base cabinetry.

The L shaped floor plan

Here the kitchen occupies two adjacent sides. The longer side has the refrigerator and the oven, while the shorter side has the sink. The work triangle is built into such a floor plan. This lay out can easily accommodate another person. It typically opens into another space or room giving the cook the opportunity to chat with others.

The U shaped floor plan

The U shaped floor plan is perhaps the best among the lot. It can be used in big as well as in small kitchens. The kitchen occupies there sides of the room with the fourth side is left open. The countertop runs all along the three sides. You can easily locate your work triangle in this layout. There is enough space for at least two people. Since there is ample space for storage you will be able to keep the countertop free of any clutter. The microwave can be kept in a base wall cabinets and a Lazy Susan can be used to store important kitchen items.

The G shaped floor plan

This floor plan resembles the U shaped floor plan a lot. Where it differs is the way the fourth side is partially used to install storage space. Like the U shaped layout the G shaped floor plan also has counter all along three walls and cabinet space below and above the counter. If the kitchen looks crowded then open up one wall to make it look spacious. You could also have a breakfast bar for the family to lessen the cramped feeling.
