Small Kitchen Remodeling Tips

If your small kitchen doesn’t excite you any more do not hesitate to go for a remodeling project. Remodeling kitchens are normally expensive affairs. But remodeling a small kitchen can be done without spending a fortune since the space available is much less. It is much less than what you would be spending to remodel your living room or your bedroom. It could be still less if you could just get lessons on the basics of remodeling and do the most of the work yourself.

To make a good job of your kitchen modeling it will to your advantage to follow certain suggestions being given here.

Select the right layout for your kitchen: There are hundreds of lay outs but you just have to focus on four basic layouts in order to make your choice. These are the one wall layout, the corridor lay out, the L shaped layout and the U shaped layout. Since most small kitchens are rectangular any one or more of these layouts would be right for your kitchen.

Try to downsize wherever possible: The small kitchen is not the place for big appliances, gadgets or big sinks. Big appliances take up too much space giving your kitchen a cluttered look. Small attractively colored appliances will create space in your kitchen and make the kitchen look colorful. If you are single or a couple, then there is all the more reason why you should immediately discard your bulky appliances. You could also go in for smaller microwaves and dishwashers without losing efficiency. Take an inventory of the kitchen items and dispose of those that you rarely used. Think of moving the rarely used items to a pantry next to the kitchen.

Go for lighter colors: When it comes to small kitchens stay away from dark colors. Dark colors make small kitchens look dark, gloomy, depressing and small. Intelligent use of lighter colors like, white, off white or beige can make the small kitchen look light airy and spacious. Remember, light colors reflect more light than dark surfaces. That makes for more light in the kitchen.

Use stock cabinetry: The small kitchen is not the place to have fancy cabinets. Stock cabinetry is inexpensive and is also easy to install. These types of cabinetry are available at most home improvement stores and are easy to install. For many people installing them is an easy DIY job. Use cabinets made of brightly colored wood that will look attractive against beige or off white background. Most often the cabinet at the back space is rarely utilized. Lazy Susans and roll out shelves make it easy to use even the back area of a cabinet.

Take some tough decisions: You will be called upon to make sacrifices. Much as you may want you may not be able to fit in a kitchen island. If you want a breakfast bar then you might have to sacrifice counter space.

Finally, select a neutral tone for the counter and have large tiles for the floor. It may not seem believable but a floor with large tiles makes the kitchen look bigger.
