Small Spaces: Interior Design Tips

The challenges thrown up by small spaces can be easily surmounted by imaginative interior decoration. The effect can be stunning provided you follow the seven tips given here.

  • 1. Discard the unnecessary: Check out the hundreds of items that you have stuffed in your small house. Think deeply about their contribution. You will be surprised at the number of items which hardly add to the character of the space or enhance its appearance. You will see that the space looks far better with fewer items on the table, shelf or the wall.

  • 2. Go for lighter window treatments: Get rid as soon as you can the old fashioned heavy drapery on the window which stops fresh air and light from coming in. They take up a lot of space too. Instead of draperies opt for blinds, shutters or even shades that give the room a more cheerful appearance. You will get some wonderful fabrics for your blinds at any decent interior design store. By spending a little more you can give yourself some wonderful blinds that fully complement the décor of your small space.

  • 3. Don’t use too many colors: Big spaces can be broken up by using different colors. But using too many colors in a small space has the opposite effect. Rather use one color for the walls. Use slightly different shades for different rooms to break up the monotony.

  • 4. Light up: Maximize the intensity of the light. This can easily achieved if you have surfaces that reflect light. Reflected light increases the amount of light. For a start have a few mirrors opposite windows. Use paints on walls that reflect light. Also keep your wooden furniture well polished. Don’t forget to keep your metal appliances clean at all times.

  • 5. Use fabrics: It always pays to have your accents done up in beautiful fabrics. However, leave the bigger furniture as they are. Your couch with all its strips, shapes and floral prints would look better if toned down a little. Nothing better to tone down a couch with than a slip cover. Now use those fabrics you have bought as accents to provide a visual interest and some emotional interest. You can do a lot with fabrics for your small space. Don’t forget to use the weaves, quilts and patters to add color to the space.

  • 6. Liven up the space: There is no better way to liven up the space than using potted plants and bouquets all over the room. Why keep the space in front of the fireplace bare? Utilize the space by placing a potted plant.

  • 7. Focus on the flooring: Bare wood is the best way to make a small room look larger. If you have the money, install a wooden floor. If the room already has a floor you can always give it a cozier and homely look by laying a light colored rug on it. If you have a dark linoleum then get a light Berber or bamboo.
